In this two-hour, two-day Pattern Reading class, you will learn how to read, interpret, and use commercial sewing patterns to create garments and projects accurately.

Kindly be aware that this course involves an assignment following Class 1, where you'll be cutting out your pattern. In Class 2, you'll initiate your commercial pattern sewing project. Please note that the completion of the commercial pattern project will extend beyond the two-hour class duration.

Our studio sews with Brother® computerized sewing machines. You’re welcome to use one of our studio machines or you can even bring your own functioning personal machine to get better acquainted with it. 

Class 1 Details:

  • Learning the symbols, markings, and terminology used in commercial sewing patterns, including grain lines, notches, darts, seam allowances, and pattern layouts.

  • Understanding how to take accurate body measurements and correlate them with pattern sizing charts to choose the correct pattern size for a good fit.

  • Techniques for adjusting patterns to fit specific body shapes or customizing designs, such as lengthening or shortening patterns, adjusting for different proportions, or modifying design elements.

  • Properly laying out patterns on fabric, pinning, cutting, and marking pieces accurately based on pattern instructions and guidelines.

  • Understanding the step-by-step instructions provided in sewing patterns, including guidance on construction, seam allowances, finishing techniques, and interfacing.

  • Exploring how to modify patterns for different design variations, such as neckline variations, sleeve lengths, or adding embellishments.

  • Learning the importance of creating test garments (muslins) to test fit and make necessary adjustments before cutting into the final fabric.

  • Understanding the additional materials needed (notions) and deciphering notations on pattern pieces for correct assembly.

  • Learning how to match patterns, plaids, or directional prints accurately and how to align fabric grain as specified in the pattern.

Class 2 Details:

Practicing the skills you learned during Class 1, we will help you start your first commercial pattern of your choice.

All students must bring their own commercial pattern, fabric, and necessary supplies to start their project.
